The timber truss and frame industry has a need to support the development of skills for entrants to their industry. However, the entry level qualification for school-based trainees has assessments within a core Unit that is in breach of the Department of Education rules. School-based trainees are not permitted to use some of the equipment essential for the manufacture of timber trusses and frames (for example, the only permitted nailing has a lower capacity than is used in production).

Response

A possible solution suggested by TABMA was that a request be made to the SSO to replicate or change the packaging rules for this qualification to create an additional Frame and Truss Pathways qualification.
To be investigated with industry stakeholders before progressing to IRC Skills Forecast and Proposed Schedule of Work.
