Two Forest and Wood Products (FWP) Training Package projects are near completion.
The projects took 11 months and involved consultation with 40 Technical Advisory Committee members. The final draft qualifications and units of competency are currently undergoing a State Training Authority review, after which the documents are submitted to the AISC (Australian Industry Skills Council) for endorsement. Below is a summary of the 2 projects:
Advances in Wood Machining and Sawdoctoring Project
Two qualifications that underpin the apprenticeship and traineeships programs in the timber processing sector have undergone major review. The qualifications are now:
- FWP31019 Certificate III in Saw Technology
- FWP31119 Certificate III in Wood Machining
Four new units of competency have been developed to support processes and advanced technology for levelling and tensioning saw blades, and efficient operation of production sawing machines in sawmills.
Forty eight units have been revised to meet current skill needs and ensure compliance with the Standards for Training Packages 2012.
One unit of competency, FWPSAW3225 Maintain frame saw blades, has been proposed for deletion from the FWP Forest and Wood Products Training Package.
Sawmill Timber and Process Optimisation Project
Six new units of competency have been developed, based on stakeholder feedback, to address skills requirements for optimisation of timber and material flow, particularly within softwood sawmills.
Eleven units of competency have been revised to meet current skill needs for the main stages of sawmill production processes and ensure compliance with the standards for training packages
